چکیده

This paper reports on our work on three complementary directions, aimed at developing: (i) a theoretical framework named UFO (Unified Foundational Ontology) for (re) design, evaluation and integration of conceptual modeling grammars and models; (ii) the ARKnowD agent-oriented software engineering methodology to develop knowledgecentered systems and processes; and (iii) methodological contributions to business process modeling and reengineering. The aforementioned theoretical framework is in the basis of our work. Here, we describe our research agenda, along with its main scientific contributions and future directions.

The Agent-Object-Relationship metamodel: towards a unified view of state and behavior

We present an agent-oriented approach to the conceptual modeling of organizations and organizational information systems, called Agent-ObjectRelationship (AOR) modeling, where an entity is either an agent, an event, an action, a claim, a commitment, or an ordinary object, and where special relationships between agents and events, actions, claims and commitments supplement the fundamental associ...

The Inevitable Ontological Commitment or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Ontology

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the application of Foundational Ontologies, i.e., formal ontological theories in the philosophical sense, for providing real-world semantics for conceptual modeling languages, and theoretically sound foundations and methodological guidelines for evaluating and improving the individual models produced using these languages. The lack of proper...

Ontological Foundations of Medical Information Systems

The modeling of knowledge and implementing it in software systems is not sufficiently supported by proper guidelines and well-established principles. An interdisciplinary approach seems to be necessary because the development of guidelines for ontologically sound knowledge modeling – in particular in medicine – requires knowledge and expertise from areas such as linguistics, informatics, medici...

A Formal Framework for Organization Modeling and Analysis

This chapter introduces a formal framework for modeling and analys is of organizations. It allows representing and reasoning about all important aspects of artificial and human organizations structured in a number of views, including performance-oriented, process-oriented, powerand interaction-related aspects. The framework provides means to model formal (pre)defined organizational structures a...

Semantics of the MibML Conceptual Modeling Grammar: An Ontological Analysis Using the Bunge-Wang-Weber Framework

ion. With a goal clearly defined as a stable state of an agent and a task as an internal transformation, we understand that a task changes states of an agent. That is, if an instance generates data flows or modifies values of internal properties of an agent, it is modeled as a task. Therefore, if “order inventory” results in update or creation of inventory information, it is modeled as a task. ...
